Picturing the Future in Oslo

On two Saturdays in October 2022, young people came to Biblo Tøyen from different neighbourhoods in Oslo to discuss climate change and learn relief cut printmaking techniques.  Part of the Deichman Public Library system in Oslo, Biblo Tøyen is more than a library. It's a space where kids between the ages of 10 and 15 can hang out in a safe and comfortable environment, participate in a variety of activities, and access different resources in addition to books.

Taiwanese-Norwegian artist Yachi Shin-Yuan Yang taught the youth participants how to make a linocut print to express their hopes for the future. Lino plates are softer and easier to manipulate than the wood plates we used in Nairobi. An exhibition at the Norsk Teknisk Museum from 9 March - 10 April 2023 included the prints made by the young artists in Oslo and Nairobi.
